Cambodia Promotes Gems and Jewelry Market for Domestic and Export Market

Cambodia is a golden land with numerous treasures especially varieties of gems which has one of the world’s renowned mines located in Pailin and the province of Takeo, Rattanakiri and Kampong Thom. Cambodian jewelry also has a long history that start from Angkor era. To date, Cambodian gems and jewelry are now more diversification, giving strong confidence from domestic and international consumers. To promote Cambodian gems and jewelry, the Royal Government of Cambodia launches the Cambodian Gems and Jewelry over four days from 16 to 19 in Phnom Penh.

Over 67 jewelry companies including 34 international companies from England, China (Hong Kong), Israel, Lao PDR, Singapore and Thailand occupied 84 booths which gave 2011 fair a new record.

H.E. Cham Prasidh, Senior Minister and Minister of Commerce, said that the Royal Government of Cambodia is trying to make gems and jewelry fair as annual international event in Cambodia. “The success of holding this event is greatly attributed to the growing trend of the markets in gems and jewelry in Cambodia as well as in the region and the world”

He added that trade in jewelry and gems stones have amounted to thousand of billions of US dollars per year. For Cambodia, trade in gems and jewelry has been thriving both in the domestic and export markets despite the quality and designs of its jewelry not being sufficient yet to meet the requirements of the consumer markets.

He called on Cambodia gems and jewelry companies to diversify and develop gems and jewelry products and look for foreign market especially US market which is valued thousand billion US dollars.

The Cambodian Gems and Jewelry Fair is annually significant event and rose international level since 2009. The first fair in 2009 has responded to the growing entrance of regional and international traders into the local market and the significant development need of gems and jewelry industry in Cambodia. “We committed to position it as the ideal platform gems and jewelry event in Cambodia. We believe that Cambodian an gems and jewelry event will present new business opportunities and integrated Cambodia gems and jewelry to the region as well as to the world markets,” H.E Cham Prasidh said.

Allen Tong, Operation Manager of a jewelry company Tai Food comes from China said that Cambodia is a good market for his company as in second gems and jewelry fair last year , where company sold jewelry which a value rank from 1,000 to 10,000 US dollars. “I believe that his company can do well in Cambodia.” Nowadays, company is seeking a distributor as well as a office in Cambodia.”

Chris Ching, representative of Aesthetic Jewellery Company, said that this is the first time that he came to Cambodia. “Because it is our first time for our company, so we do not know well about Cambodia market especially security in country, but our company is looking for a new market.” After exhibition, he will go to Hong Kong to report situation in Cambodia and discuss whatever his company can do business in Cambodia.

The Cambodia Gems and Jewelry Fair 2011 is the 3rd of its kind after the first and second edition been successfully held in 2009 and 2010 respectively.
