Athletes of National Wu-Shu Cambionship Tournament 2011 Decreased

The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS) in collaboration with the Cambodian WU-Shu Federation (CWF) have organized the Nationwide Wu-Shu Campionship Tournament 2011 from 4 to 8 May at the National Stadium in Phnom Penh.

224 Wu-Shu athletes included 94 female athletes from 12 clubs in Cambodia have attended the Nationwide Wu-Shu Championship 2011 to compete for Wu-Shu championship 2011 in Cambodia. According to data in 2010, there were 285 athletes including 140 female attend the tournament. It showed the decreasing of Wu-Shu athletes this year.

Tuy Bunhoeun, Chief of the Mondern Sport Office in the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, told the Southeast Asia Weeklu that every year the Ministry has organized the national Wu-Shu championship tournament 2011 in Cambodia in order to select the best players of the year. After selected, they will send to National sport training center to train.

He continued to say that Wu-Shu championship is aiming to promote and develop the sport as well as to select the best players for the future national and international Whu-Shu tournament in Cambodia and abroad.

H.E. Bun Sok, Secretary General of Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport said that the Wu-Shu tournament this year went well and the games reflect the friendship and solidarity.

He point out that Wu-Shu in Cambodia is developing. Last year, Cambodian athletes won a bronze medal for country from SEA Games in Laos. Cambodia also sent Wu-Shu athletes to compete in Asia Games in Guanzhou, China. This year, Cambodia will send Wu-Shu athletes to take a part of SEA Games in Indonesia on November. “I hope Wu-Shu association enhance all athletes ‘ability and get medals from competition for country,” he mentioned.

The Wu-Shu competition has divided into two categories in which there are male Wu-Shu competition and female Wu-Shu competition. The competition has two subjects including Taolu (Showing) subject and Wu-Shu Sanshou (Fighting) subject and there are eight weighting categories including 45kg (male), 48kg (male), 52kg (male), 57kg (male), 60kg (male), 65kg (male), 70kg (male) and 60kg (Female).

According to the result, there are 66 athletes get good rank from number one to number three in Taolu subject in which including under-16 Wu-Shu, adult, veteran and group competition.

For Sanshou subject, Heng Vasna won for 45 kg category, Poungh Chanthearith won for 52 kg category, Tang Narith won for 57 kg category, Luy Rinda won for 60 kg category, Poy Thla won for 65 kg category, Vangh Virak won for 70 kg category and Long Sreypich.

Wu-Shu is a Chinese sport that was introduces to Cambodia athletes late 2000. Across the world, this ancient and energetic sport is enjoyed in 122 countries including Cambodia around the world. Wu-Shu have also known as modern Wu-Shu or contemporary Wu-Shu is both an exhibition and a full-contact sport derived from traditional Chinese martial arts. Since the establishment of CWF in 2010, there are 20 Wu-Shu clubs and association with about 1,000 students in Cambodia.
