TFC Launches 15th Tep Khunnalk Memorial Cup


 Phnom Penh, Cambodia (13 December 2010)


The Tennis Federation of Cambodia (TFC) had organized the 15th Tep Khunnal Memorial Cup for national and international players to match with each other on December 4th-12th at National Training Centre in Phnom Penh.

The 15th Tep Khunnal Memorial Cup divided into six categories: Men’s Super Singles match, Men’s singles match, Men’s Doubles match, Juniors 18 Under match, Juniors 16 Under match and Veteran’s Singles match with 77 players.

Tep Rithivit, Secretary General of TFC, said that the purpose of creating the Tep Khunnal Memorial Cup is remembered his father who is the best Cambodian tennis player in 1960s with a great name over the Asia and spends almost whole life and heart in playing tennis. It is not only memory, but it is also a tournament for all tennis to compete in get champion and test their ability with sharing experience to each other.
“In the 60’s and early 70’s, tennis was considered as an elitist sport worldwide and Cambodia was no exception, Cambodian tennis at the time was at its prime, dominating all regional countries like; Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Myanmar and Laos,” he explained. He wants to survive tennis in Cambodia again, also on the international stage.

Tep Khunnal Memorial Cup is one of TFC’s program and launch this competition every year at the end of November and mid of December. “We also have another program such as a tournament in March, the Cham Prasidh Tennis Cup in June and Cambodian Open Cup in October,” he remarked.

“Tennis is a sport based on individual practice and technique with a strong feeling. If one player lost his feeling when compete, that player may loses his match. Therefore, people called tennis is the popular individual sport and football is the popular team sport.” he said. “I will try all my best to make tennis sport for interesting and enjoyable to attract people in Cambodia to pay attention on this sport and develop tennis,” he added.

He suggested that all tennis players to pay attention in practice and learning the tennis, and suppose all people to support this sport by sending their children to involve in this kind of sport for sustaining the tennis in Cambodia in young generation.
According to record of 15th Tep Khunnal Memorial Cup, the result of tournament was giving that:

In Men’s Super Singles match, Bun Kenny, Cambodian player gets over Thailand player, Timo Sivapruksa with the fi nal tournament 6-2, 6-1 at the National Training Centre on December 12th. In this year, Bun Kenny known as the Cambodia’s top ranked tennis player. In competing, there are two players from Thailand, two players from Vietnam and two players from Cambodia.

In Men’s Singles Match, national team member Orn Sambath competed Ek Chamroeun and he won in the score of 6-1, 6-0. Men’s Doubles match won Long Samneang and Om Sambath with the pair competing Ek Chamroeun and Seang Mao.

In Juniors 18 Under match, Orn Sambath is totally different mode when he struggle with Kan Sophon. Finally, Sophon won at 6-3, 6-2.

With the juniors 14 Under Match, the boy Saman Moni Odam gets a competition with Touch Sophearath at the fi nal round. As the result, he won in the score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
