15th International Half Marathon 2010 Hosted in Siem Reap

Sport and physical education provide a forum to learn skills such as discipline, confidence and leadership and they convey core principles that are important in a democracy, such as tolerance, cooperation and respect.

The National Olympic Committee and the Khmer Amateur Athletics Federation in cooperation with the Angkor Wat Marathon Executive Committee and local NGO Hearts of Gold with the Japan Medical Joggers Association launched the 15th Angkor Wat International Half Marathon 2010 on December 5th at Bayon Temple in Riem Reap.

H.E. Dr. Thong Khon, Minister of Tourism and President of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia, said that the International Half Marathon has held already 15 years since 1996.

4050 people who are national and international athletes and people love sport countries came to join the International Half Marathon this year with the number of 25 percent more than last year. Among of them, 1,750 athletes are international athletes from 53 countries, 350 athletes are domestic foreigner athletes and 1,950 athletes are Cambodian athletes, he highlighted.

He mentioned that the joint of Marathon today is showing the support and esteem of everybody on Cambodia and also showing the love of everybody on sport to reinforce solidarity, friendship and peace between nations around the world.

“This event is a message to tell the world that Cambodia is peaceful and developed on all sectors especially tourist and sport. Moreover, the International Half Marathon is a big annual event in Cambodia which connected sport and tourism together in contribution to developing country and promoting the tourism sector in Cambodia,” he remarked.

In the first ten months of 2010, Cambodia received international two million and Siem Reap province got one million with the increasing rate of 20 percent compare to the previous year “I hope that Cambodia can reach 2.5 million tourists in 2010 and 3 million in 2015,” he said.

The 15th Angkor Wat International Half Marathon 2010 divided into many events such as 21 kilometers distance for the Men/Women race, 21 kilometers for the Wheelchair Men/ Women race, 10 kilometers for the Men/Women race, and 3 kilometers for the family race.

Hem Bunting, Cambodian athlete won the first champion in the 21 kilometers distance Men race with the record of 1h 10mn 11ss and SatokoVetani, Japanese athlete won the first champion in the 21 kilometers distance women race with the record of 1h 22mn 31ss.

Van Vun, Cambodian athlete won the first champion in the 21 kilometers distance Wheelchair Men race with the record of 1h08mn15ss and Na Vath, Cambodian athlete won the first champion in the 21 kilometers Wheelchair Women race with the record of 1h 53mn 07ss.

SyawathThammavonchit, Lao athlete won the first champion in the 10 kilometers Men race with the record of 32mn 13ss and LengLengkoh, Singapore athlete won the first champion in the 10 kilometers Women race with the record of 39mn 17ss.

San Mao, Cambodian athlete won the first champion in the 10 kilometers Wheelchair Men race with the record of 45mn 42ss and SokChamreun, Cambodian athlete won the first champion in the 10 kilometers Wheelchair Women race with the record of 1h 23mn 22ss.

Ja Cob Roberts, athlete won the first champion in the 3 kilometers family race with the record of 11mn 02ss09. The first Angkor Wat International Half Marathon was initial hosted on December 13, 1996 with two objectives of supporting the survivors of landmines and appealing to the world to stop the use of these inhuman landmines.
