Construction of Two Dragon Bridges to Ease Traffic Pressure in Phnom Penh

By Sok Lak

While Phnom Penh is boosting its development, many problems also have occurred at the same time. However, the traffic problem gets worse from day to day. It is not only in Phnom Penh, but also in the downtowns of other cities. In order to develop the city to become a city without traffic problems, Phnom Penh Municipal Authority in cooperation with a private company to develop Phnom Penh, has targeted many buildings and development areas. Now, the fourth and fifth bridge “Double Dragon Bridge” at Diamond Island officially opened on November 7 and, in allowing the public to witness the event, Phnom Penh’s Governor Kep Chuk Tema was highly praised.

H.E. Kep Chuk Tema said, after the ceremony, that the three bridges in Diamond Island cannot solve the traffic problem there so the government and a private company decided to build another bridge to ensure the traffic at Diamond Island gets better as well as in Phnom Penh. “These two bridges are designed using traditional styles which connected another two roads along Samdech Hun Sen Park as one system of traffic in Phnom Penh.”
Okhna Pong Khiev Se, General Director of OCIC, said that the company struck a deal with Phnom Penh Capital Hall in 2006 and currently many infrastructures have been seen such as Pich (Diamond) Bridge and Hang (Swan) Bridge. The new bridges, Double Dragon Bridges are made from concrete, 120m x 12m, spending US$2 Million and each bridge ranges around US$1.1 million.

Even though there was no boat race this year, the amount of visitors was still high, so these two bridges will ensure that the traffic in Phnom Penh could ease, H.E. Kep Chuk Tema said. “We cannot forget the event on November 22 last year which caused the deaths of 353 people.”
