The Ministry of Agriculture, forestry and Fishery (MAFF), the Ministry of Industry Mine and Energy (MIME), the Ministry of Commerce (MOC), Supreme National Economic Council (SNEC), Chamber of Commerce of Cambodia (CCC), and Federation of Associations for Small and Medium Enterprises of Cambodia (FASMEC), co-organized to launch the Cambodia Rice Forum 2011 on October 17, 2011 at Diamond Island in Phnom Penh.

“The Cambodia rice forum 2011 is intended to gather all relevant parties involved in the rice value chain to share knowledge and update global market trends as well as enable the Cambodian Rice Community Players to plug in to valuable knowledge of various expert public and private institutions and individuals throughout the forum,” Te Taing Por, President of FASMEC (Federation of Associations for Small and Medium Enterprises of Cambodia), said.

The event would be the first organized in Cambodia to benefit mainly the Cambodian Rice Community in its path to achieve the Royal Government of Cambodia’s target to reach one million tons of rice exports by 2015, he added.

Mr. Van David, a Senior Advisor of FASMEC, said that 30 to 50 key international buyers who have the most experience buying Cambodian rice over the last decade as compared to regional buyers who do not possess such valuable experience.

He added that the event will be a platform for all key actors in the rice value chain in order to interact together from upstream to downstream, from rice millers to international buyers, and importers and inspection companies.

“As it is an international issue on rice for Cambodia, we wish that it will be institutionalized after the event,” he added. He stressed that FASMEC is only a young private sector institution showing to all Donors and Government Institutions alike that the Private Sector must take the initiative and the lead the way to drive the rice sector forward for Cambodia, so FASMEC is giving an example of private sector initiative. Cambodia exported 100,000 tons of milled rice product for the first half of 2011, a report from the rice dealers said.
