2011 Car Rally in Asia Crosses Cambodia

Cambodia took part to host Asia Cross Country Rally 2011 which is the largest Federation International Automobile (FIA)-certified rally in Asia. The event will held on August 6-11 in two countries, Cambodia and Thailand from Pattaya to Siem Reap direction through Poipet border with 14 competitor cars and 43 supporter cars.

The Asia Cross Country was design as a test driving and navigation skill, endurance and team work, as well as preparation, durability and toughness of the 4 wheel drive vehicles. Vath Chamroeun, Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC), said that NOCC cooperation with Yokohama Japanese Company to organize the event. Five countries from Asia countries including Japan, India, South Korea, Thailand and Malaysia will be part in the competition which have total race 1875 km including 175 km in Cambodia area.

He stressed that about 300 people including two drivers in a car for competitors will arrive Cambodia on August 10 and participate to celebrate the winners which held in font of Angkor.

Even though Cambodia athlete do not involve into the competition, but this tournament is important for Cambodia to promote tourist and develop country as well as sport sector.

After the experience of this event, Cambodia will cooperate with Federation International of Automobile (FIA) to set up Automobile Federation in Cambodia. “Cambodia will try to organize an automobile federation and prepare athlete for next tournament,” he added.

The race began since 1996 and designs to cover many types of terrain like jungle, swamps river crossings and many kind of challenge with nature.
