Twelve badminton clubs across the country have sent their skillful table- tennis players both young and old to attend the Cambodian badminton championship 2010 in Phnom Penh.
The badminton championship 2010 has taken place at the National Olympic Stadium complex from November 10th to 14th, organized annually from the Ministry of Education Youth and Sport in cooperation with the Badminton Federation of Cambodia, under the financial support of the Royal Government of Cambodia.
The purpose of this competition is to provide the challenging arena for Cambodian badminton players who come from the surrounding provinces to challenge together for observing their techniques, and skills, and then select the talented players to compete with international players in the international badminton championship in the coming year, and it is also to promote the Cambodian badminton sport as the popular recreational sport activities for Cambodians as well.
According to a report of the Badminton Competition Committee, there are 12 clubs with 173 players including 29 players from the Badminton Federation of Cambodia, 22 players form the Khemarak Club, 18 players from the Cambodian Lawyer Club, 17 players from the Trapaing Plong Club, 14 players from the Preah Khan Reach Club, 14 players from the Monytabana Club, 12 players from Kampong Chhnang province, six players from Preah Sihanouk province, 17 Players from Svay Rieng province, eight players from the Ministry of Interior, 4 players from Banteay Meanchey province and 12 players from the Lun Lim Phai Club.
In the competition, they divide into 12 kinds of matching: male team match A1, male single match A1, male pair match A1, male under 16 single match A2, male under 16 pair match A2, male over 19 single match A2, male over 19 pair match A2, male under 19 single match A2, male under 19 pair match A2, female single match, female pair match, elder pair match. As the result, Preah Khan Reach Club took the fi rst place; Khemarak Club took the second place and Monytabana Club took the third place in the male team match A1.
Beung Kim Tor, Deputy Director of Physical Education and Sport Department, said that among all sports, badminton is also a kind of sport that used to join international competition as other sports as well. Since the ministry supports the sport and provides a space to train, Cambodian badminton is improving. Moreover, ministry tries to promote badminton in Cambodia and advice Cambodia badminton federation to create more clubs. In the same time, the Badminton Federation of Cambodia also suggests us to create more clubs at primary schools and high schools.
He remarks that the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC) also helps to develop sport sector as well as badminton in Cambodia and create a training course for all sports included badminton for every two year.
Dr. Aing Sambo, Deputy Secretary General of the Badminton Federation of Cambodia, said that Cambodian badminton sport is getting better from year to year including quantity and quality. “In the past, badminton has no standard in training and enough equipment to practice, but now our players have a good coach to train and equipment to practice. Moreover, we used to send Cambodian badminton players to train at various countries in Southeast Asia,” he added.
He noted that a lot of youth have been involving into badminton. Compare to the past, there are a lot of elderly people in this sport field. It shows that Cambodian youth have started to know the valuable benefit of sport and country is stable. On other hand, sport can reduce society problems because youth has a habit to play sport instead of doing something bad in society, he said.
According to Touy Bunheoun, official from the Physical Education and Sport Department, Cambodian badminton is developing from year to year. All level from the Badminton Federation of Cambodia and the Ministry of Education Youth and Sport also pay attention on this sport by providing technical equipment and financial support.
“As we know that badminton is a racquet sport played by either two opposing players (singles) or two opposing pairs (doubles), who take positions on opposite halves of a rectangular court that is divided by a net,” he said. “Players score points by striking a shuttlecock with their racquet so that it passes over the net and lands in their opponents’ half of the court. A rally ends once the shuttlecock has struck the floor, and each side may only strike the shuttlecock once before it passes over the net.”
